The body’s autonomic nervous system is made up of two sub-networks of nerves that extend along the length of the spine: the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. These nerves regulate automatic processes such as breathing, heart rate, and more. At times, they can carry painful signals as well. The peripheral nerve block procedure entails injecting an anesthetic to the target nerve(s), which will be determined by X-ray fluoroscopy. In total, the peripheral nerve block process takes about 20 minutes. After the injection, the patient will be monitored and then safely discharged to go home. Patients can resume their normal activities shortly after the procedure.
